I specialize in working with adults who are in transition & experiencing grief or confusion.

I specialize in working with people who are expecting and adjusting to parenthood. It can be confusing and overwhelming. Immense physical and hormonal changes are coupled with sleep deprivation and new expectations and responsibilities. While we expect this to be a time of great joy, many women are unaware of the range of likely emotional reactions.
I’m passionate about maternal and paternal mental health, with extensive experience with pre- and postpartum families. I get how crucial it is to have a safe, non-judgmental place to share in an open and honest way what being a new parent is really like.
For additional resources navigating being a new parent, see Marin Perinatal Therapy.
I've also worked extensively with people with a terminal diagnosis as Manager of Psychotherapy Programs at the Women’s Cancer Resource Center in Berkeley, CA (2012 - 2018). I helped countless women find psychological care and created and managed many psycho-oncology programs. Since then, I've worked with many people with terminal diagnoses and their loved ones.
I've learned that while receiving treatment it is important to surround yourself with people – and a therapist – who can empathize with the grief over the loss of health and existential questions that arise.

My background:
My training began in 2003 at John F. Kennedy University, where I received a masters in transpersonal counseling. I then interned at the Women's Therapy Center – the Bay Area's leading training facility for relational psychotherapy – as well as Albany High School.
I became interested in and built a specialization in psycho-oncology while serving as Manager of the Psychotherapy Programs at the Women's Cancer Resource Center in Berkeley, CA. In that role I helped countless women find psychological care, coordinated a no-cost, brief therapy program for low-income women with cancer and couples facing cancer; managed a group psychotherapy program; facilitated two support groups for women with cancer; and co-created a psycho-oncology continuing education program that instructed the mental health community about death, dying, chronic and acute illness.
After becoming a mother, I became interested in perinatal mental health. My passion about maternal mental health led me to co-found Marin Perinatal Therapy with my colleagues Shannon Myers, LMFT and Margot Kirschner PsyD.
We provide psychotherapy and direct support for Marin’s families. We also provide resources, training and consultation to the perinatal medical and therapeutic community.
I also run the Town of Fairfax's New Parents & Babies / Toddlers Support Group. We welcome all parents and babies / toddlers (0-3 years) weekly for a free, drop-in support group in Fairfax. Pregnant folks also welcome. Please email ali@biglifechangetherapy.com for the week’s meeting location.
